INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR AGREEMENT
This agreement is between [STUDIO NAME] ("Studio") and [CONTRACTOR NAME] ("Contractor"), starting [START DATE].
- Services. Contractor will provide bookkeeping services: recording transactions, reconciling accounts monthly and preparing a monthly profit and loss report. Other work needs written approval first.
- Rate and invoices. Contractor bills $65 per hour, invoiced monthly. Studio pays within 15 days of receiving each invoice. Contractor expects about 10 hours a month; more than 15 hours in a month needs Studio's written OK.
- Contractor status. Contractor is an independent contractor, not an employee. Contractor sets her own hours and methods, uses her own equipment, and pays her own taxes. Studio will not withhold taxes or provide benefits.
Margin note: Have a lawyer check this. Contractor status depends on how the work actually happens, not just what the contract says. Your state may use a stricter test.
- Confidentiality. Contractor will keep Studio's financial records and client information private, during this agreement and after it ends. Contractor will only use this information to do the work in this agreement.
- Records. All books and reports belong to Studio. When this agreement ends, Contractor will return or delete Studio's files within 10 days and confirm it in writing.
- Ending the agreement. Either party may end this agreement with 14 days' written notice. Studio will pay for all hours worked up to the end date.
- Other clients. Contractor may work for other clients, as long as it doesn't break section 4.
- Governing law. This agreement is governed by the laws of [STATE].
Margin note: Have a lawyer check this if Contractor lives in a different state than Studio.

WHY IT'S SHORT
Every clause is under 60 words. If a clause needs more, it usually needs a lawyer.
